Bathroom remodeling in Lakeland FL usually starts with the hall bath, not a spa drawing. The tub sits there. Nobody uses it. The grout still looks fine. The shower pan under it does not.
That is the walk-in shower conversion. You are replacing the wet area that Florida humidity already found.
The hire page for the full bath is bathroom remodeling. Dollar ranges live on what the budget buys and bathroom remodel cost in Lakeland. This post is the conversion itself.
What the job actually is
We pull the tub. We open the wet wall enough to see the drain and the substrate. Then we build a pan with slope to the drain and a membrane that is the waterproofing, not the tile. Tile is the finish.
If the toilet and vanity can stay, they stay. That is the cheapest lever on any Lakeland hall bath. Moving a toilet, shower, or vanity drain opens the slab. Published guides put that add around $2,000 to $5,000 before tile. Those figures are market ranges, not a True Builders quote.
A zero-threshold, or curbless, shower is a different scope. The floor has to drain without a curb. That is the aging-in-place request. It is not the same job as a standard walk-in with a low curb.
The sequence after the tub comes out
Demo is the short part. The rest of the week is what you cannot see once the tile is on.
The wet wall opens far enough to read the drain, the valve, and the backer. Soft backer comes out. Sound substrate stays. A new pan goes in with slope to the drain so water does not sit on a flat floor. The membrane covers the pan and the wet walls. Transitions at the curb, the niches, and the fixtures get sealed before anyone sets a tile.
Tile goes on after that stack is done. Porcelain or ceramic is the usual wet-wall choice in the showroom. Marble and natural stone are options. They still sit on the same sloped, waterproofed base. Frameless glass goes on last. A bench or a niche is a layout call on the first visit, not a change after the membrane is in.
Most bathroom remodels run about two to four weeks once work begins. Tile and vanity lead times stretch the calendar more than the labor. We confirm the schedule before the room opens so you can plan around one bath being down.
Curb, curbless, or leave the tub
Three versions of the same wet wall, three different slabs.
A standard walk-in keeps a low curb. The drain can stay if the tub already sat on that wall. That is the hall-bath conversion most Lakeland houses ask for.
A curbless, or zero-threshold, shower needs the floor to fall to the drain without a lip. A linear drain is the usual ask with that look. The hire page is clear: a $10,000 hall-bath band does not buy a curbless shower with a linear drain. Say you want that on the first visit. The slab work is the difference, not the tile color.
Keep one tub in the house if kids still live there or you plan to sell to a family. Convert the hall bath. Leave the primary tub if that is the last one. Comfort-height toilets and grab-bar blocking are the other aging-in-place pieces that belong in the wall while it is open.
Why hall baths fail here
Lakeland sits in Florida humidity. Water sits on a flat pan, finds a seam, and travels into the slab. You see a little soft grout. Behind it you get soft backer and, later, surface mold on the wall.
Signs the pan already failed: loose tile at the curb, grout that keeps cracking and falling out, a musty smell that returns after you clean, or a floor that feels soft at the shower edge. Those are on the hire page as remodel signs, not grout problems. Another tube of caulk does not close a path into the slab.
Surface mold on a failed wet wall is a remodel problem. Standing water in the house, or a mold cleanup after a leak, is not this company. We rebuild the bathroom after the water is gone.
City of Lakeland Building Inspection requires a residential remodel or alteration permit when the work changes rooms, plumbing, electrical, or walls. Applications go through the city’s iMS system. Plans upload to ePlan. Swapping a faucet can sit outside that. A tub-to-shower does not. We pull the permit. License CRC1335717 is in the Florida DBPR search.
What to decide before tile
Pick the drain location on the first visit. If the layout works, leave it. If you want the shower on a different wall, say that before anyone prices tile.
Ventilation is part of the wet room. A fan that vents outside is cheaper than another failed wall. Recessed lighting and the vanity light get picked with the fan so the room has one electrical plan.
Finishes get picked at the showroom: tile, a stock or semi-custom vanity, fixtures. You compare real pieces, not a two-inch chip. Then you get a written price after we walk the room. Soft drywall or a failed pan that shows up after demo gets its own number before we keep going.
